The Job
24 July 2004 // 1:49 p.m.I have worked in a public library for just over one and a half years. My job has definitely had its ups and downs, and it seems that my time there is coming to an end.
I started off on a contracted job; guaranteed hours each Saturday. Then thanks to some restructuring I had to switch to a casual contract, and be hired as and when I was needed. I kept coming in every Saturday.
Unfortunately, my newish boss has decided to give most of the casual hours that are up for grabs to the Other Casual Member. Which leaves me with hardly any work this summer, when really I should be working more than ever.
Despite everything, I love my job! I've become used to all my regulars and can chat with them easily. When I first started I was terrified of everyone's scrutiny, but people learn to get used to you, just as you learn to get used to them.
Plus, you get to meet all sorts of (for want of a better word) weirdos in the job. There's one guy who can't talk, comes in and just takes phone books and spends all his money photocopying them.
There's a woman who demands TV guides and a pen, and will spend hours copying them out. There is a fair share of creepy people too, the most prominent of these is this man who comes in and asks for things kept under the counter so he can look down my top. Lovely.
I don't really want to leave, but I guess I have to move on at some point. After all, I leave in October. But despite all the crap I've been through with the New Boss, I'll still miss it.
